Mark B answers:

I think you should see a phyciatrist… Ask your parents to take you to one, they will beable to give you medication for anxiety. I have anxiety and I have a patch that I put on my back its pretty small and discrete in case youre worried about people seeing it. They also have pills you can take. Good Luck…

Jemima asks…

Why would a Dr do this to a patient that suffers from Severe Anxiety Attacks?

I don’t know why he did this but it TOTALLY freaked me out, I started to have an anxiety attack and yelled at him to “Get that damned thing away from me, I don’t want to see THAT!!!!!!!!
I mean at least ASK someone’s permission before you do something like that and send them into a panic thinking something’s wrong!!!!
I don’t like surprises…..ever, especially since I suffer from extreme anxiety/ptsd/depression and bi-polar disorder…..mostly because of todays incompetant medical profession!! and how badly i’ve been treated by them.
I guess being raped when I was a teenager, then having a male ob/gyn molest and fondle me holding me down until I was screaming at the top of my lungs for help (no nurse was present in the room.) I’m sure didn’t help matters either.
He came at me with a huge mirror while I was lying on the gyn table, and asked if i wanted to look at my vagina…..WTF????

Mark B answers:

Just because a doctor goes to med school doesn’t mean he/she isn’t a complete moron. I’m sorry that such a traumatic thing had to happen to you just because of someone’s incompetence. Though this situation obviously wasn’t nearly as bad, but I had really bad ear infections in both ears (to the point where my glands were swollen, it hurt to chew and I couldn’t hear) and the first two doctors I saw said I didn’t have an ear infection my ears were probably just a bit irritated! The second one actually gave me pain meds and numbing drops, which didn’t help. The third doctor I saw was baffled that he prescribed the drops (considering most people are allergic to them and it makes their infection worse). She said my ear infections were so horrible she couldn’t even see inside of my ear and prescribed steroids, super strong antibiotics, and super strong pain meds. Obviously my situation wasn’t nearly as bad as yours, but it’s a good example of how a lot of medical professionals are morons. I hope you’re seeing someone to help you with your traumatic experiences. If not I would recommend finding a good counselor and committing to longterm treatment with him/her. I wouldn’t recommend seeing a psychiatrist because I think they feel it’s necessary to just throw drugs at you and call it good. Good luck.

Questions And Answers On Panic Attacks And Treatment

By Mark B

Kirstie asks…

How difficult is it to get treatment for PTSD with the VA?

I’ve had PTSD since boot camp, and my rape at my first base (they happened within a couple of months of each other – the PTSD was diagnosed, but I did not claim it when I discharged)… Since then, I’ve had panic attacks (I have never had them before), and if I hear a loud noise my body goes into panic mode… My heart rate goes so fast, and I’ve even burst into tears… and I don’t know why…. I hate this feeling. But I don’t know what to do. Like most people, my boot camp was filled with a LOT of yelling, screaming, banging, and things being thrown… I’m a very skittish person since then. None of this was typical behavior of me prior….. so what do I do? Is it pretty much pointless to even think the VA can help me? I’ve heard that it is pointless in today’s economy to even bother asking the VA for help… especially when there are people missing limbs who need help from the VA…. I feel like my problem is a waste of time, for them… especially when there are people out there who need way more help than me. What do you think?
I’ve also experienced sleep walking since these events.

Mark B answers:

It sounds like PTSD due to secual trauma? If it was documented at all in your active duty records it is a lot easier. Did you keep documentation about the incidents? The VA is attempting to work with not only war PTSD, but the VA has been attempting to have more specific therapy and counseling for women. You should plan a day to visit your local VA hospital have your DD214 and any other documentation pertaining to the incident(s). I was assaulted twice while serving, but back then you didn’t report it, so I have been round and round as far as a percentage of my disability. But I have received and given options to participate in private/personal therapy and groups of veterans who have similiar problems as you stated. We all gave up years of our lives to serve our country some during the cold war and during actual conflicts. No one Veteran deserves more or less care from the VA, we all served with a risk of losing our lives.

Graham asks…

Ideas for treatment of depression?

So I have difficult to treat depression. Was on Lexapro 20 mg for like 5 years…and felt fine…then all of a sudden the depression came on again. Tried Effexor instead of Lexapro…and it gave me panic attacks. Than put on Paxil 40mg but it put me at about the same state as the Lexapro. Then the doctor put me on Vyprexa…which seemed to help stabilize my mood but I gained 20 lbs in like a month. So then I wanted to change meds again. So the doc tried to just take me off the Vyprexa and I got super depressed. So she tried me on Lithium…because it was cheap…but it didn’t seem to help any and was giving me a bunch of side effects. So came off the Lithium and tried Welbutrin…and since starting the Welbutrin have had migraines all week. Doctor wants to take me off the welbutrin and see if it improved my migraines…and increase my paxil to 60 mg a day. The doctor seems to want to put me back on an antipsychotic…but they are so expensive…and I’m really worried about gaining weight. The doc thinks that Abilify will work well for me and won’t make me gain weight. I’m not really sure what to do but I could really use a second opinion…I appreciate your time and consideration.

Mark B answers:

I have bad news for you. The depression drug business is a racket. It’s organized crime on that has basically co-opted the illegal drug business.
If I could recommend you to try something, I’d really like to know if it will work. Eating more fresh fruit (not canned or frozen or processed), like oranges, apples, berries, bananas, honeydew, watermelon, and then combining that with cardio exercise. I started running when I was about 20. If you’ve never run before, you have to try it and not give up the first try. The human body is designed to run! If you’re not jumping out of bed in the morning after running, I’ll eat my shirt. Unless you are disabled, you have to try it. You’ll notice several incredibly amazing things – you’re alertness level will skyrocket, instead of feeling drowsy and tired all day, you’ll be able to stay awake and clearly focused all day long, every day, without any difficulty whatsoever. Maybe you’ve tried running before and never experienced this benefit.

Questions And Answers On Help Panic Attacks Ireland

By Mark B

Shelley asks…

Sufferer of severe anxiety and panic ONL HOLIDAYS and in a desperate way…XANAX not working. Please help.?

I am a 34 yr old female. I am on holidays in London and Oxford for One more week. We just arrived 2 days ago. I’m with my partner of 8 years who was very much looking forward to this holiday as he hasnt had one in ages and he had a very rough year being made redundant from his job. At home I lead an extremely stressuful life, i’m heavily involved with a possive metnally ill mother and she is extremely interfering and demanding in my life. My partner and I are after moving 18 months ago to our new location in Ireland and i’m in a job i cannot tolerate but cannot leave and he cannot find another one. We were both in very well paid jobs in the city. But live is very different now. However, i’m now crippled with panic attacks this trip and severe anxiety and claustrophopia about being in the hotel room. I havent slept in 2 nights. My doctor prescribed ‘XANAX’ for me to ‘take as i need it’ but she only gave me 10 tablets. I do not usually take medication for anxiety so believe me i was really desperate when i decicded to take them. I took one at 5am this morning (done nothing for me) and TWO at 7 pm this evening. My doctor told me to take two if things were really bad. However its 11pm at night now and i’m still not ‘sleepy’ and am down using the internet in the hotel just to get out of the room. I really need to sleep but the XANAX is doing nothing. On top of all this i’m feeling very depressed. This hotel can get me a doctor out here tonight at a very high charge and i really dont have the money and hate seeing a doctor who is not at home any how. If you were me, what would you do… Please give me only postiive and calming feedback, nothing frightening to make me more anxious. Your help is trueuly appreciated. Thank you so much.

Mark B answers:

The xanax should be working. You might want to look into the doctor. The only thing that he will probably do for you is give you more medicine though.
Breathe. Take really, really deep breaths and make your body relax until it relaxes on its own. Feel your body get heavy.
Try drinking chamomile tea or warm milk
I think you’ve worked yourself up to much trying NOT to have a panic attack… That you are having one.
Lay down, let your body go limp, and let the medicine take over.

Marie asks…

Ireland. Mum very ill, psychriatic unit will not admit her..help.?

my mum is 69. Up until 2 months ago she drove her own car, attended day care facilities and took her medication. She was bright and alert and interested in things. I’m her only daughter. She is highly manipulative and i’m attending a psychologist for help in ‘detaching’ as i was feeling suicidal from her constant demands. She used to feel 100% it was my role to leave my partner and my life and ‘look after her’. However 2 months ago i noticed a change. She would stare into space and is full of depression. My dad 70 (wtih heart problems, high blood pressure, atsma, vertigo and diabetes) is her main carer. We thought she wasnt taking her medication and that she needed review as she was depressed and having panic attacks and in a high anxieity state. Dad dealt with her like this for one month until eventually after turning up at A & E about 4 times and keeping dad awake all night, she was admitted. However wtih the cutbacks, her psychitarist basically said shes highly manipulaitve and just wants to be in a psychiriatc unit. Now her GP, psychriatic nurse and psychitarst is saying they wont do anything for her and ‘certiainly wont admit her’. My dad is at breaking point and i’m constantly worried, i just cannot get on with my life. They psychiratist is saying the psychriatic unit is ‘not the setting for her’. yet shes severely depressed adn pacing up and down. Shes currently in a private nurshing home this past 4 nights and the owners says that she is extremely agitated and they cannot understand why they wont admit her to the psycriatic unit. Everyone has washed their hands of her and the nursing home feels shes ‘extremely vulnerable’ and ‘desperate’. Shes complaining of sweats and shakes and i feel her medication needs to be looked at. The psychitarist has basically said throw her in a nursing home, but shes too physically fit and young to go there at this stage. She was fine up to 7 weeks ago. Now she is afraid to be alone in the house. My dad is very stressed out with her. She needs proper mental help and have her medication sorted properly.. How can i help?

Mark B answers:

Sorry, but I have noticed that you have asked this question quite a few times on this forum.

Why don’t you do as advised before and address the Psychiatric team responsible for your mum. They are the only people who can help you! The more times you ask on YA, the more people will think you are crying wolf and will ignore you.

Ask the Social Services or equivalent in Ireland (assume you are in Republic). I was under the impression they are extremely helpful (well, they are to my elderly aunt who lived in Co Kildare).

Get professional help instead of putting this question on YA all the time.

Questions And Answers On Im On The Edge With You

By Mark B

Alana asks…

Do you sharpen a knife with a jagged edge or one that has no jagged edge?

my daddy is down stairs in the kitchen sharpening knives htat have a jagged edge on them. he so convinced that you sharpen the ones with a jagged edge. im telling him that you don’t because that hurts the knife. arn’t i right?

Mark B answers:

For home cutlery, you first sharpen a straight bladed knife with a honing rod each time you use it. Reserve the stone for occasional sharpening of a straight blade, only by experienced professionals as the angles are critical to keeping the sharp edge. A serrated blade is meant to stay sharp over time unless it is severely damaged. Then you can get a set of ceramic rods to rake the blade over to help knock down the points. Otherwise unless you have a round grinding sharpener for serrated blades, let the professionals do it. It is cheaper for good cutlery than buying a new blade. You can always check a local Fair where some professional services set-up or check with a local restaurant supply service.

Questions And Answers On Panic Attacks While Driving

By Mark B

Rachel asks…

What is the best way to prevent or overcome panic attacks while driving on a motorway?

My sister is a reluctant driver though she has lately been driving a lot on smaller roads. This has increased her driving confidence but last week while on the motorway (with me as a passenger) she had a little panic attack. She carried on driving safely but it freaked her out so now she’s reluctant again. Any good advice for her please?

Mark B answers:

Let her know that the interstate has relatievely few accidents, compared to smaller roads thus it is the safest. Hardly ever had to respond to anything there, and when it wasnt serious.

This is because there is a) no intersecting traffic, no stopsigns to blow through, no oncoming traffic, so chances of making a serious mistake are significantly lower than on smaller roads, so if she is confident enuff to drive on the high risk roads, then tell her that the safest road shouldnt pose a problem, then just focus on the car in front, keep your distance and slowly shell forget her fear if she keeps doing it.

Also visualizing what she is going to do, where she is going to go before leaving may help. And think about five minutes ahead of where you are when driving so that you may form a mental plan of what to do when you get there.

Mike asks…

I have panic attacks while driving ever since some one hit me in a car accident. How can I get over my panic?

Mark B answers:

Do you know fear is a defense mechanism? Fear helps you act against potential danger and not do dangerous things.

Fear of driving, in its innate and sublime form, is there to protect you. But when it turns into driving anxiety and panic attacks while driving, it hampers your performance rather than help you in any way.

Here we present you with solid tips and techniques to cure your panic and anxiety attacks while driving. When you apply these techniques you will see your panic attacks disappear, and what will remain is awareness to spot signs of fear and take appropriate action to protect yourself.

So don’t worry about fear, let it come to you whenever it is useful. And it is definitely not useful when you pull it towards you and multiply it a hundred times to create panic for yourself.

How to Prevent Fear Turning Into Panic or Anxiety While Driving

Most of us have a slight fear of driving. A frightful incident while driving creates an impression in our mind that plays to itself the next time we drive.

While most people manage to douse the fear, some tend to kindle it and inflame it with every passing incident. They make fuss over physical symptoms of fear like sweaty palms, trembling or dizziness, which makes them even more scared of driving, eventually ballooning into driving anxiety and panic attacks while driving.

The trick is to catch the moment of fear before it soars to uncontrollable heights.
